Haven't read enough Schmitt to track the exact intellectual trajectory but the German theologian Karl Adam had a similar evolution from a rich Christian humanism to National Socialist racialism. Both impulses in Adam seemed to flow from German Romanticism/Lebensphilosophie.
I wonder if Maritain's early involvement in Action Française arose out of his engagement with Bergson's thought which seems similar to the German Romantic tradition...
Thanks, Dan. I'm especially interested in the Schmitt piece. I only know him as a Christian humanist in the late 1920s, not as a Nazi in the 1930s.
