An Ascetic Way of Life in a World of Abundance
The latest episode of Acton Line just dropped, “An Ascetic Way of Life in a World of Abundance”.
In it I speak with Dylan Pahman, research fellow and executive editor of the Journal of Markets and Morality at the Acton Institute, about his essay “An Ascetic Way of Life in a World of Abundance” which was published in the Spring 2025 issue of Religion & Liberty. The essay was adapted from his forthcoming book The Kingdom of God & the Common Good (Ancient Faith, 2025).
We talk a bit about how Orthodox Social Thought is shaped by the Orthodox churches’ liturgical theology, the ascetic core of spirituality, and by how man’s ascetic nature shapes his social life.
We also tease a potential future conversation about his suspicion that blind spots in Catholic Social Teaching could be illuminated by light from the east.
Enjoy!
