On the Hugos
Once more unto the guest hosting Acton Unwind breach!
In this week’s episode ‘Rumble in the Christian College Jungle’ I discussed whether Hillsdale College is a “Christian College”, Google’s Gemini Chatbot, and the Hugo Awards scandal with my colleagues Dylan Pahman and Noah Gould. A great conversation all around. You know a conversation is fruitful when two additional episode pitches are made before the end of the first segment!
The first two segments were so rich that I forgot to mention Jo Walton’s An Informal History of the Hugos: A Personal Look Back at the Hugo Awards, 1953-2000. It’s an anthology of her blogging at Tor.com about the finalists and winners of the award’s first half-century.
Walton’s infectious enthusiasm for these books inspired my own attempt to read through the Hugos. The award was so good for so long that it is truly tragic to see what it has become. Rereading Walton’s book is great consolation. Highly recommended!
